Story
https://foha.org/pet/queen2023/ All hail me, your Queen! Hey there! My name is Queen, and I am a big, beautiful pup with a larger-than-life personality and a royal charm. The great outdoors is where I truly shine—I absolutely love going for walks and can never get enough of them! Leash walking? Piece of cake! I’m always ready for an adventure. Hiking is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Whether it’s a winding trail through the woods or a peaceful park, I’m in my element. There’s just something magical about exploring nature—splashing my paws in streams, sniffing out all the new scents, and, of course, rolling in the grass (I just have to!). I’m also a fantastic travel buddy. Car rides? No problem! I’m happy to either gaze out the window, watching the world go by, or just settle in with a tasty treat. And speaking of treats… let’s talk food. I. Am. FOOD. DRIVEN. Seriously, if you’ve got snacks, you have my full attention. Training? Yep, I’ve had training sessions, and with the right motivation (ahem, treats), I’m eager to learn and show off my skills. But let’s be real—I like to think I’m the one in charge, so I need a patient and consistent owner who knows my breed and can keep me on the right track. I’ve been in the shelter for two whole years, just waiting for my perfect match. I may come off as a bit sensitive, so I’d thrive in a quiet home where I can feel safe and comfortable. But once I warm up to you? Oh boy, get ready for endless love, constant demands for attention, and yes—plenty of slobbery kisses! If you can handle that, I promise I’ll be your best girl. I’d do best as the only dog in the home, soaking up all the love and attention (because let’s face it, I deserve it!). A household without kids would also be ideal, given my size and my big, excitable heart. But don’t let my size fool you—I’m a total teddy bear and a great house guest. I love hanging out with my favorite people, cuddling up, and just being part of the family. If you’re looking for a majestic, affectionate, food-loving, adventure-ready companion, I’m your girl! Let’s take on the world, one walk (or treat) at a time. If you’d like to meet me, fill out an application (no obligation), and let’s make it happen. Hope to see you soon!

Story
Name: Shaq Sex: Male Estimated Age: About a year old Best Guess for Breed: Mixed Breed Mastiff Dog Weight: About 60 lbs Lives With: Dogs and adults (including kids). Housebroken? Shaq is housebroken. He is currently working on crate training (making great progress!) and learning his basic commands. Story: Shaq was rescued from a shelter locally in Washington, DC. Shaq is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. He knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with his humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Shaq is just looking for someone to be his new best furend and we know that he will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. As a puppy, Shaq will need an adopter who is committed to setting him up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising him both mentally and physically. He will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! What my foster says: Shaq is really just the best, and we absolutely adore him. He is 100% the most cuddly dog we have fostered and is an absolute ham. He’s great with other dogs and all humans. He’s fully potty trained and only goes to the bathroom outside. He’s good on the leash, but can be a little mouthy when he plays (like a typical puppy) - we are working with him to correct this behavior and he’s responding really well to training. He has lived with kids and other dogs and does great. He’s a great, happy boy and will make a fabulous family dog or companion! The fee to adopt Shaq is $475. That covers the cost of all his vaccines, the collar he’s wearing, his transport to DC and his care in his foster home. He’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines and neutered. Shaq has been seen by a shelter vet and we are not aware of any health issues. If you think that Shaq might be your perfect match, apply today!April 6, 2025, 4:04 pm

Story
Maisie is a female F1B Mastador. (75% English Labrador & 25% English Mastiff) She is 13 months old and 85 pounds. She will likely grow to be about 100 - 110 pounds . She is smart, playful, and strong. She knows all basic obedience commands and is house trained. This girl needs a yard and experienced dog owners. These owners need to be able to handle Maisie. She is a beautiful girl and is built like a tank. She takes a while to warm up and initially comes across as anxious and fearful when meeting strangers. Afterward, she becomes extremely bonded, loving, and very friendly. We would not look for homes with small children since, in her excitement, she might knock them over. She is learning to "leave it" regarding the cat and is good with one foster's dog but not the other. So she would be fine as an only dog. She is up-to-date on her vaccinations. Freckles does not have ownership of this dog, but they are helping her foster find her the right home.

Story
A Gentle Giant!MEET KENNY! Kenny’s story is one of survival, resilience, perseverance and love. It’s a longer tale than most of our other dogs, because we have known Kenny for longer than most before he finally became a Tara’s House dog. Kenny is thought to be about 2 years old and weighs approximately 95 pounds. He is a big, beautiful, hunk of a dog. Here’s his story… In January of this year a large, brindle dog was seen running as a stray in a rural part of Maryland. He had reportedly been on the run for up to a month and was being fed by a farmer whose land the dog was seen on yet couldn't be approached or contained. A volunteer with the county shelter saw the Lost and Found Facebook post and was immediately drawn to his plight, especially due to the overnight temperatures being in the single digits at that time. She gained the use of a trap and drove to the farm every day for eight days to restock the trap with food and often waited in her car to see if 'today would be the day!'. The dog showed up several of those days but never went far enough into the trap to step on the level to close the door. On the eighth day, she got her wish.  The big, brindle dog was calm and likely relieved that after at least a month on the run in sub-freezing temperatures, he was finally in the care of a compassionate human being. The farmer whose property the trap was on was elated and came out to meet him. The gentleman's name is Mr. Ken; Kenny was named in his honor when he was brought to the county shelter.   Kenny spent several weeks at the shelter where he became a volunteer and staff favorite. Mr. Ken, his wife and their adult children were able to come visit him, and Kenny immediately took to the wife especially and was extremely gentle with her. A few weeks later he was foster-to-adopted by a woman with a male pitbull-mix and two cats. The two dogs had had a wonderful meet-and-greet and the adopter was given the two-week shutdown instructions and advised to do slow introductions with the cats. Unfortunately, the adopter didn't follow the instructions and Kenny was returned to the shelter the next day.  Given the extreme capacity issues the shelter is experiencing he was pulled by the SPCA of Annapolis before Tara’s House could find a foster for him. After two months of cajoling, the SPCA agreed to transfer Kenny to Tara’s House where he was immediately enrolled in Ridgeside K-9 Central MD’s professional board and train program. He is currently there learning obedience & impulse control; leash walking and engagement with his handler; recall; socialization; and confidence building skills. This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity and one that most rescue dogs never get! His adopter(s) will also be given training on how to reinforce his training, continue with his learning journey and ensure a successful transition into the home.  In the time we have had with Kenny we have learned that he is very smart. He picks things up quickly and he actually watches TV intently! He’s loyal and remembered the volunteer who trapped him, walked him at the county shelter and visited him at the SPCA before being there to watch him depart with the trainer - even if it was weeks in between each visit. Kenny is the kind of dog that really loves his people. He has a calm, serious side to him but he can also be playful. He doesn’t have a “golden retriever personality” but once he gets to know you he’s affectionate and loving. He may take time to “warm up” to new people, but when you are in his circle you will be adored. Kenny’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for Kenny by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.June 8, 2025, 6:34 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application HEADLINER: Izzabella aka Izzy. HISTORY: One owner who did not provide basic medical care so Izzy lived many year with out of control skin issues, ear infections, UTI’s, etc. PERSONALITY: Izzy is a sweet, friendly girl that loves meeting new people and welcoming them into the house. She loves attention and affection and will lean in hard for pets and ear scratches. She tends to spend her days snoozing away but when she gets the zoomies she takes them seriously and this girl can move despite her age.  She lives peacefully with a 60lb male mixed breed but is reactive when seeing dogs out on a walk. Izzy is a bit fearful of fireworks and thunderstorms and will sometimes get spooked by loud noises. Izzy likes things to happen on her own personal timeline and can be stubborn when they don’t. She will test limits by whining and carrying on (dancing around, stomping her feet, wagging her tail furiously while staring at you) to try to get her way. She’s learning that those things don’t work in our house but it’s hard not to laugh at her antics. She’ll do it to the other dog in the house too when he’s laying in a bed that she wants. She usually gets her way with the dog.  FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Napping, soaking up love and attention, laying in the sun MEDICAL ISSUES: With vet care and a quality diet Izzy’s skin issues and ear infections have cleared up and she is no longer a big itchy mess. She did have a mammary tumor removed while being spayed. She is not currently on any medications. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: Izzy enjoys hanging out with her people, so a family that spends a lot of time around the house/yard/garden would be great for her. Once integrated with another dog she is very polite and respectful but she definitely needs slow introductions to new dogs. Application Fees, Adoption Donations and Rescue Policy: Please know that 100% of our fees and donations pay for the costs of rescuing dogs. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application Meet Moose! This beautiful boy is a sweet and lovable friend who wants nothing more than to love and be loved. He’s come a long way since he first came to us. Initially seriously underweight at only 80 pounds with signs of neglect – he was likely locked in a crate with no padding for much of his life. Today he’s 104 pounds of sweet goofiness. He loves to nap, chew on his toys, go for walks, and thump his tail on the ground whenever you enter the room, or speak in a high voice… or say his name.  Likes: Moose is especially fond of people. He’s never met a person he doesn’t instantly love, and the feeling seems to be mutual. He wants to say hi to every neighbor he sees on his walks, and they’re all eager to oblige. Every vet, vet tech, or crew at the day care he occasionally goes to adore him. Moose also loves to chase and pounce on his big indestructible ball and is especially fond of chewing on his Nylabone. He’s also very fond of small backyard creatures – birds, squirrels, rabbits. Great news if you have a pesky groundhog in your yard, but you do need to be aware and on guard while walking him. Dislikes: Moose does not like to be left alone. His history of neglect and being left in a crate has led to separation anxiety. He is showing signs of growing confidence, however. He frequently seeks out his crate during the day to nap and he sleeps in an open crate every night in the bedroom. He is also comfortable going into another room and lying down by himself – he’s less and less of a Velcro dog all the time. Personality: Moose is a love bug. He has a very sweet personality and wants to please. He can be very playful and make one laugh out loud as he twists his big body into all different shapes for belly rubs. He’s pretty chill in the house – he loves to nap and chew on toys and doesn’t get into things or chew things he shouldn’t. Though he does seem to find the random sock! He’s very excited to welcome visitors – giving everyone a big “hello” and is then content to chew on his bone. Energy level: Moose has a few short bursts of playful energy during the day and is content with three short walks a day. His current foster doesn't have a fenced yard, but if they did, he’d likely only need a morning and evening walk, with a little playtime in the yard. Not good with: Given Moose’s interest in small backyard creatures, he’d likely not do well with cats or small dogs. He once lived with his older sister, but it's unclear if he’s had any other experience with dogs and he has not been tested with other dogs. Housetrained: Moose is completely housetrained. In fact, he seems to have an enormous bladder! Crate trained: Moose is re-learning to not fear a crate. Fence: Moose would do well with a fenced yard so he can freely play with his big indestructible ball and have plenty of safe space for sunbathing. Leash walking: Moose loves going for walks and he's been worked with quite a bit to mitigate his high prey drive. He’s learned a lot! He is walking at a heel, sitting whenever we stop walking, and beginning again with the “OK” command. He still needs work to keep from pulling when he sees a squirrel because he is very strong, but he’s getting better every day at staying more focused when he gets distracted. Hot dogs are a big motivator! Medical issues: Moose had a corneal ulcer resulting from an errant eyelash. It has healed completely. He will be checked again in two months to make sure it hasn’t returned. While initially underweight, Moose is now at a good weight of 104. The best home for Moose: Moose would do best in a home where people are home most of the day. He is an excellent work-from-home companion and really likes to be with people as much as possible. He would be great with older kids to snuggle and play with and with dog parents who can patiently continue to work on training. He is such a good boy and wants so much to have a home with people he can love. Moose is a dog with incredible potential and so deserving of a forever home. We adopted our sweet boy from PetSmart, and he’s been a wonderful companion ever since. He’s a large dog with a big heart who thrives on human connection. He loves people, is very friendly, and enjoys being around others as much as possible. He’s looking for a home where he can stretch his legs—daily walks and some space to roam would make him very happy. While he’s a gentle soul and does not bite, he can be a bit territorial, so he’ll do best with someone who understands how to give him clear boundaries and positive structure. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion with a playful spirit and a protective side, he might be the perfect fit for you!

Story
He was left behind when his owners moved out. Very affectionate. He looks like a goofy, kind of floppy hound dog as he ambles around. He’s sweet and affectionate. Gets along with most dogs. He’s a little bossy with food especially with a timid dog. Feeding in a crate solves that. Loves his play time in the yard with two stout dogs. Great on a leash. The Adoption Fee Includes Age-Appropriate Vaccinations (DA2PPV, Bordetella, Rabies), Deworming, Spay/Neuter, Microchip, Flea, Tick and Heartworm Treatment and Prevention, and Sheltering. Adult Dogs are Heartworm Tested and Treated as Needed. Tanner's adoption fee (if picked up locally in Crossville, Tennessee) is $225. If transport is needed, his adoption fee is $525 (out of state, East Coast, Great Lakes or New England regions).Thank You for Your Interest in Adopting a Canine Companion from Foccas-tn.org!To Apply Please Copy and Paste to Your Browser:https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=hb2428&method=online_form_html&formid=41LOCATED IN CROSSVILLE, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, TN. Story
Hello there, I'm Mark! I may be young, but I've got a heart full of love to give. Every morning, I wake up excited for the day ahead. I love playing with my favorite chew toy, but what I really crave is a good game of fetch with a human friend. I'm a quick learner, too! I've already mastered 'sit' and 'stay', and I'm eager to learn more. I promise to be your loyal companion, always ready for an adventure or a cozy nap on the couch. I'm not just looking for a home, I'm looking for a family. Adopt me and let's create a lifetime of wonderful memories together.

Story
Lucy is a beloved family dog. She is huge into cuddling. She loves toys and stuffies. She is very timid. She is scared of other people and taking walks. She would do really well in a one person household. She has a lot of love to give and we are desperate to find a home for her where she will be loved as well.

Story
Meet Maisie – The Beautiful, Bouncy Mastador Looking for Her Forever Home!  13 months old | 75% English Lab, 25% English Mastiff | Female | House Trained | Up to Date on Vaccines  Maisie is a stunning F1B Mastador with a heart as big as her paws! At just over a year old, this playful pup is smart, strong, and full of life. She knows all her basic obedience commands and is fully house trained—ready to bring joy, loyalty, and a little goofy charm into the right home. We aren’t Maisie’s original family, but when her last foster had no choice but to take her to the shelter, we stepped in to keep her safe and loved while she awaits her forever family. Her journey hasn’t been easy—given up due to her large size and playful nature being too much for a home with a toddler, then bounced between homes where not all resident dogs welcomed her. Despite it all, Maisie continues to shine with resilience and affection. Maisie can be anxious meeting new people, but once she trusts you, she becomes deeply bonded and incredibly loving. She thrives with structure, patience, and lots of play. Because of her size and strength, we recommend an experienced owner and no small children under 10—she’s still in her puppy phase and doesn’t quite know how big and strong she is! The Good Stuff: Smart and obedient House trained Playful and affectionate Learning to be cat-friendly (closely supervised and doing well!) Good with some dogs (she plays nicely with our dog Chester!) Loves to romp in a yard Up to date on vaccinations What She Needs: A strong, confident adopter experienced with big dogs A home without other dominant or reactive dogs No small children while she grows out of her puppy exuberance A yard to burn off her energy Continued training and socialization Spay to be completed (not yet spayed) Maisie is an incredible companion for someone looking for a loyal, intelligent, and fun-loving best friend. She’s had a rough start but deserves a stable, committed forever home where she can truly thrive. Could that be with you? Currently fostered in a loving home and available to meet serious adopters. Let’s give this sweet girl the fresh start she deserves! Contact Laura at  smlewalsh@msn.com  June 9, 2025, 1:44 pm

Story
Hello everyone, this is Rah. Rah is a 4 year old, 110 lb female, North American Mastiff. Rah loves cuddles, snuggles and couches. Dog parks and playing fetch are her absolute fav! She is VERY gentle with children despite her size. Unfortunately, as big as she is she is afraid of her own shadow. Overall she just loves love. She has seasonal allergies, allergic to all poultry and beef. She can eat salmon, pork, and any other type of fish. To keep her allergies at bay, she is on Apoquel and daily Benadryl.
